WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Cardinals defeated Heidelberg University 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Otterbein University (10-10) advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the second-straight year. They will now head to Mason, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern University in the OAC semifinals.
The Cardinals met the Student Princes (10-9) for the second time in as many weeks and, in similar fashion, swept the Berg in doubles to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead.
Senior Ryan Roberts and sophomore Andrew Sutter won first doubles 8-2, while senior Steven Albert and freshman Kendall Coffman claimed an 8-3 win at the second spot.
Reigning OAC Player of the Week sophomore Ryan Shutt and his partner sophomore Tyler Gibbons picked up an 8-4 win at third doubles to complete Otterbein’s sweep of doubles competition.
The Cardinals only needed two victories in singles play to clinch the win over Heidelberg and received those from Shutt and freshman Dustin Goldman.
Shutt cruised to a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles and Goldman secured a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles to give Otterbein the victory.
The Cardinals will continue in the OAC Tournament Friday, May 4, when they take on Ohio Northern at the Lindner Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The match with the Polar Bears is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
