ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein University men’s tennis team had a very successful trip to central Florida, going 3-2 to improve their record to 7-3 heading into Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.
The Cardinals picked up wins over Western New England University, Lawrence University (Minn.), and Onondaga Community College (N.Y.). Otterbein’s losses came against Oglethope University (Ga.) and the University of the Ozarks (Ark.).
The Cards were led by freshman Will Willson, who won four of his five singles matches at the No. 1 position and paired with classmate David Seckel to go 4-1 at first doubles. The Detroit native only lost two sets while in the sunshine state, with both coming in a loss to Ozarks.
The second half of the No. 1 doubles pair, Seckel was just as impressive at third singles. He finished the trip 3-2, picking up wins over Western New England (7-6, 6-3), Lawrence (6-4, 7-6), and Onondaga (6-0, 6-1).
Junior Ryan Shutt held down the No. 2 singles spot for the Cardinals. He notched a 3-2 record in singles play with wins over Western New England (6-1, 6-0), Lawrence (2-6, 6-3, 1-0), and Onondaga (6-1, 6-0). He also paired with sophomore Zach McDivitt to win a pair of matches at the second doubles pairing.
Along with his wins in doubles play with Shutt, McDivitt held his own with a 3-2 record while playing in the fourth singles matchup for the Cardinals. His victories came against Western New England (6-0, 6-1), Lawrence (7-6, 6-1), and Onondaga (6-1, 6-2).
The Cardinals will be looking to carry their success in Florida into the OAC, as they begin conference play Friday, March 29, with a trip to Alliance to take on the University of Mount Union.
