Ron Stewart put together a standout men’s basketball career from 1979-83, ultimately graduating (and still standing) as Otterbein’s all-time scoring leader with a staggering 2,549 career points. That is a record made prior to the introduction of the three-point line.
The shooting guard was a 3x All-American and 4x All-Ohio Athletic Conference standout during his time, starting as a true freshman and remaining in the lineup until graduation.
As a sophomore in 1980-81, Ron helped guide Otterbein to a share of the OAC title before a magical run to the NCAA Final Four. The Cards would come up just short in their quest for a national crown after an 82-79 loss to Ursinus in the semifinals.
As a senior, Ron scored a (then) school-record of 50 points against Denison, with that single-game output still ranking second all-time. He also shares the Otterbien single-game mark of a perfect free-throw percentage… going 15 of 15 against Heidelberg.
Stewart shot .497 from the field for his career and remains the school record holder in scoring average per season, posting 31.7 points per game during the 1982-83 stretch.
He went on to become a health and physical education teacher while operating/owning his own real estate business.
