Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late comeback falls short for men's basketball

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A furious comeback came up just short for the Otterbein University men's basketball team, suffering their first set back of the season in a 72-68 loss to Denison University.

Jarius Jones led the Cardinals with 15 points in 16 minutes of action. Troy Scowden was the other Cardinal to score in double figures, adding 14 points off the bench.

The Big Red started out hot, building to a lead as large as 14 points in the first half. Denison connected on 11 of its 27 3-pointers, including seven in the first period. Buckets by Dominic Theado and Jones helped Otterbein cut the deficit to 10 points at the break

Denison led by as many as 18 points with 10:14 to play before the hosts started putting together a rally. Ignited by a triple off the hand of Julian Heckman, Otterbein went on a 15-0 run to make it a one-possession game. Heckman finished with eight points and seven assists, his fourth straight contest with at least seven dimes.

The Big Red was able to halt the run with three free throws with 1:38 on the clock. Otterbein answered at the other end with a three by Jones, but could not tie or pull ahead throughout the final minutes.

After Otterbein was 0 for 9 from deep in the first half, the Cardinals finished the game just 5 of 18.

Otterbein will have over a week off before starting OAC play. On Dec. 6, the Cardinals will travel to Mount Union for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
