Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second half comeback lifts Otterbein over Big Red

WESTERVILLE – A pair of second half goals erased a halftime deficit, seeing the Otterbein University women's soccer team prevail over Denison University, 2-1. With the win, the Cardinals wrap up non-conference play with a 4-4-1 record.

Denison struck first in the 32nd minute. A loose ball trickled to the Big Red's Mattie Mielke, who one-touched a shot from way out, sneaking past Ella Schwertfager for a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold heading into halftime.

Casey Rigel netted the equalizer for Otterbein in the 55th minute. Off a throw in, the ball found the foot of the senior who launched a shot with her left foot. The ball ricocheted off the far post and bounced in, knotting the contest up with plenty of game remaining.

Otterbein capitalized on a scoring chance midway through the second half. Despite two shots finding the hands of the Denison goalkeeper, upon review the Big Red was whistled for a handball in the box and Otterbein was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Keaton Aspacher fired a shot to the lower right of the net, lifting the hosts ahead 2-1 in the 71st minute.

Schwertfager and the Otterbein defense were tremendous down the stretch. With 15 minutes to play, Schwertfager made a pair of saves to preserve the lead and help the Cardinals remain unbeaten at Memorial Stadium. The senior recorded four total saves in the win.

The Cardinals begin conference play on Saturday when they head to the University of Mount Union. Kickoff against the Purple Raiders is slated for 7 p.m.
