Bryan Payton begins his first season as assistant coach for men’s and women’s track and field and cross country at Otterbein University.
Payton, a 2009 graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington, comes to Otterbein from Allegheny College where he served as assistant track and field/cross country coach during the 2013-14 academic year. He coached sprinters and hurdlers, and helped one student-athlete qualify for the NCAA’s in the heptathlon. Payton was responsible for bringing over 40 recruits into the Allegheny track and field program.
He spent the 2012-13 season at Trine University where he served as an assistant coach in both football and track and field. There he mentored an All-American in the 400 meters and qualified the 4x400 relay team for the NCAA championships. Payton was also instrumental in bringing 77 track and field recruits to Trine. He coached tight ends for a 7-3 football team while at Trine.
At Indiana, Payton was a three-time captain of the Hoosier football team at running back, and helped lead the team to the 2007 Insight Bowl. A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Payton received his bachelor’s degree in general studies, with a concentration in journalism, from Indiana.
Payton is a USATF Level 1 certified coach.
