Howell About That! Cards Survive Quakers in Double OT

WESTERVILLE, Ohio- Despite facing adversity throughout the last week and trailing the majority of Tuesday night, the Otterbein women's soccer team displayed its resiliency to come from behind and eliminate Wilmington from the OAC Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night. The Cardinals, watching Annie Howell score her first goal of the season in the 102nd minute, escaped with a thrilling 2-1 win in double overtime.

The Quakers end their season at 8-9-1 following the loss, while Otterbein snaps an unusual two-game skid and improves to 15-3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Quakers took the lead at 21:11 when Riley Allison sent a high arching corner kick into the box, Mackenzie Weaver was able to get her head on the ball and beat Cardinal goalie Erin Gordon in the upper left corner.
  • Wilmington held onto the lead at the break, despite being out shot 11-8.

  • The Cardinals appeared to find the equalizing goal in the early stages of the second half when Priscilla Severance scored a header of her own, the goal was disallowed though due to an offside call.

  • The Cardinals finally found life on offense at 79:31 when the Quakers were called for a handball in the box, giving Bella Shivley a chance to put the Cards on the board. Shivley buried the penalty shot for her 22nd goal of the season.
  • Wilmington had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes when Taylor Huffman snuck a through ball past the Cardinal defense, Maddie Scott corralled the pass and sent it directly into the chest of Erin Gordon who came screaming up field to make the most important save of her season.

  • The two sides remained deadlocked at the end of regulation with Otterbein holding a 17-6 shot advantage in the second half.

  • Otterbein saw just one shot on frame in the first overtime period, but Quaker goalie Lauren Galloway stepped up to make the save sending the game into a second overtime.

  • The Cardinals finally put the Quakers away when Delaney Earl sent a long cross into the box at 101:47, Annie Howell came out of nowhere and buried the pass into the upper left corner to send the Cardinals flying into the next round.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Otterbein, the defending tournament champions, will be playing in its third consecutive OAC semifinal match Thursday night across town.

  • Wilmington dough valiantly after losing to Otterbein, 4-1, a few weeks ago. The Cardinals still finished with a 32-14 shot advantage and also held an 18-5 edge in corner kicks.

  • Gordon made nine saves in goal, her second-highest total of the season.

UP NEXT:
  • Otterbein will travel to Capital for the second time in five days on Thursday.

  •  Capital won 2-0 Saturday to earn the second seed, and first-round bye, in the tournament.
