DELAWARE, Ohio – A somewhat low-scoring chess match ended up going in the favor of Otterbein Wednesday evening at nearby Ohio Wesleyan, as the Cardinals emerged from Selby Stadium with a 10-7 victory over the host Bishops.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both sides exchanged punches throughout a close first half, seeing ties at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before a goal from Julia Karas with 2:13 left gave Otterbein a 5-4 lead entering the break.
- Ohio Wesleyan (6-3) wasted no time drawing evening with a goal just 90 seconds into the second period, but the Cards would strong together a difference-making stretch from there.
- Otterbein embarked on a 5-1 scoring run as the second half progressed, which included sophomore Cameron Finnegan scoring three times in a 12-minute span.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Karas led all player with four goal, three coming in the first half and another to begin Otterbein's rally in the second. She also had a team-best five draw controls and leads the squad with 35 points this spring.
- The Cards finished with a lopsided 33-10 shot advantage, including a 3-of-9 effort on free positions.
- Otterbein scooped up a season-high 40 ground balls, as seven players totaled at least four.
- Finnegan posted a hat trick for the Cardinal offense while freshman Lexie Van Cleef scored twice.
- Otterbein defeats OWU for the third-straight season, also winning by scores of 11-9 and 13-8 in the span.
