WLAX: Otterbein Sets New Program Record at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team set a new program record for most goals in a single game Wednesday night, throttling Muskingum by a final score of 29-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action.

The Cardinals, winning their third game in a row, improve to 5-2 overall behind a standout game from sophomore Emily Willms. She tied a program single-game record with eight goals, matching the output of Katy Williams (2017) and Tory Blatt (2012).

HOW IT WENT DOWN:
  • The contest was actually tied 2-2 after nearly six minutes, as the Muskies scored twice off the stick of Carly Spitz.

  • Otterbein took control from there, embarking on a 7-0 run (including three-straight from Willms) to open a comfortable margin.

  • Muskingum temporarily stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 13:48 mark, but the Cardinals countered with a 9-0 run this time to punctuate the half.

  • Otterbein built on that 18-3 lead throughout the second half, netting another 11 to leave little doubt in the outcome.

KEY STATS:
  • Six Cardinals had multi-goal nights. Macey Buchanan and Julia Karas both scored five times while Carli Rigel and Cameron Finnegan each tallied hat tricks.

  • Otterbein finished with a 47-7 margin in total shots, as Muskie goalie Cailin Wise totaled 11 saves.

  • The Cards won 26 of 32 draw controls, led by nine from Rigel and another six from Buchanan.

  • Freshman Courtney Costello caused as many turnovers individual (3) as Otterbein committed as an entire team.

UP NEXT:
Otterbein will face a much stiffer test to finish out the week, returning home and welcoming defending OAC champion Mount Union. First draw from Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
