WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Cardinals welcomed Heidelberg to Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon and defeated the Student Princes 1-0 on the back of a Grace Weidenhamer goal.
Otterbein came out with a tireless press and won the ball back in opportune positions but couldn't apply the finishing touch to numerous crosses that were put into the box.
First big chance fell to the Cardinals with 8:30 left when a cross from Lindsey Whitmore trickled across the box and found its way to the feet of Bailey Zanella who couldn't steer her shot on target.
As the first half came to a close, Bailey Zanella found herself with another great opportunity at the back post but Meredith Bruce was up to the challenge and made a crucial save to keep the score line 0-0.
Otterbein was leading in the shots category 6-1 heading into the break as they had multiple quality chances in the first 45.
Ten minutes into the second half Otterbein had a corner kick that was headed down by Morgan Somers but the Heidelberg goalkeeper made the save down to her left and prevented any rebound opportunities for the Cardinals.
The breakthrough came about 15 minutes into the second half as Grace Weidenhamer notched her first goal of the season, with Ava Bruns being credited with the assist.
The Cardinals had a few more chances in the second half but held off the Student Princes to secure the 1-0 victory and their seventh win of the season.
Otterbein finished with 17 total shots and Bailey Zanella led the way with five, two of which were on target.
Bruce fought hard in the goal for the Princes and ended the game with 11 total saves overall, while Schwertfager only had to make one on the day.
The Cardinals next contest will be a mid-week clash with the Blue Streaks of John Carroll. That match is set to kickoff Wednesday at 7pm
