WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Otterbein Women's Soccer collected its sixth victory in a row inside Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night, cruising past Marietta for a 5-0 decision.
Otterbein can be no worse than the No. 3 seed (postseason home game) in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament as a result of the win, although the Cards will still have the opportunity to move up and earn a first-round bye (with more points on Saturday) and some help from either Capital or Ohio Northern above.Â
The Cardinals also continue their dominance over the Pioneers by winning a 16th-straight matchup in the series and, thanks to another shutout, have limited Marietta to one singular goal since 2007.
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
- Otterbein's goal came early in the 12th minute off a corner kick from Anjuli Anderson. The ball originally found Mackenzie Peeke's head out of the air, then landed just in front of Camryn Earl. Earl volleyed the ball off one bounce just past Marietta's Madison Miller to put the first tally on the board.
Â
- Earl quickly found the back of the net again just a mere minute after her first goal. Anderson played another corner kick into the 18-yard box, this time finding the head of Morgan Somers. Her ball found Earl in the exact same place as the previous goal, and this time Earl finished the play off a header rather than a foot.Â
Â
- The Cardinals earned their third goal thanks to Ava Bruns and Grace Weidenhammer. Bruns found herself in Pioneer territory and played a ball across the field to Weidenhammer, who ripped a shot just outside the 18-yard box. The ball went straight through Miller's hands and rolled between her legs to find the back of the net.
Â
- The last goal of the first half came with two seconds remaining on the scoreboard. Payton Kaufman headed a ball off a corner kick but found the crossbar instead. Crashing backside, Alexandra Stein hit the redirected ball in between the goal posts.
Â
- After intermission, play held steady until the 85th minute when Alyssa Lemos claimed the final goal of the night. Brooke Smith came out of the box in an attempt to stop a cross from Morgan Mahan, but the ball rolled just out of reach and Lemos took her shot just before Smith could gain possession of the ball.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Both teams shuffled up their goalkeepers with six different players finding time between the posts. For Marietta, Miller and Smith split a half each. Otterbein shared time between Ella Schwertfager, Caitlin Drew, Brynley Preston, and Drew Ultican (a transfer from Marietta in the offseason).
Â
- A slew of players found the field for both teams with 11 Pioneer substitutions and 17 Cardinals taking the field as well.
Â
- The Otterbein offense dominated the contest claiming 18 shots (12 on goal) and 15 corner kicks, compared to Marietta's three shots (one on frame) and one corner kick.
IT'S THE WEEKEND:
Otterbein will remain at home to finish out its regular season against the Purple Raiders of Mount Union, with Saturday's contest slated for 7 p.m. The Cardinals will also take time to celebrate Senior Night!
