Cards Eliminated from OAC Tourney in PK's at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – Yet another low-scoring slugfest between Otterbein and Ohio Northern played out on the women's soccer field Thursday night, as the two rivals jockeyed back and forth once again in another postseason matchup.

The two sides, meeting in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament for a sixth-straight year, played to a scoreless deadlock for the second time this fall before penalty kicks would decide the fate. The Cards and Polar Bears went 90 minutes without a goal earlier this season, and another 110 this time around wouldn't be enough either.

ONU ripped off three-straight shots in the early going but goalkeeper Ella Schwertfager made a save in the top-left corner on the final attempt to halt any danger. The Cards saw a few scoring opportunities leading into halftime, with a shot from Gillian Losey saved bottom left by Polar Bear keeper Becky Moss.

Northern turned up the pressure a bit across the second half with a 9-4 shot margin, including six in the opening 15 minutes. Otterbein countered right back on a few occasions, missing high twice while a look from Bailey Zanella in the 75th minute was saved.

Neither side could break through moving forward, with Schwertfager making a critical stop (on a free kick) at the horn of the first overtime. Then, she punched another shot in the waning moments of a second overtime high over the crossbar.

Despite Otterbein making three penalty kicks (via Cierra Clemons, Anjuli Anderson and Grace Weidenhamer), the Polar Bears would be perfect at the X and get a timely stop from new keeper Whitney Ho midway through.

Payton Kaufman and Morgan Somers were named to the All-Tournament Team as a result of their efforts in the postseason.

ONU finished with a 22-8 shot margin in a game that also had a combined 19 fouls. The Polar Bears advance to play top-seeded Capital in the championship this weekend.
