WLAX: Cards Breeze Past Yellow Jackets in OAC Quarterfinals

PHOTO GALLERY

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was the second meeting at Memorial Stadium between the teams in exactly 14 days, but the outcome remained very much the same as Otterbein blew past Baldwin Wallace in quarterfinal action of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament Friday under the lights.

The Cardinals, who defeated BW by a 21-12 count on Good Friday, pulled away once again to hand the No. 5-seed Yellow Jackets a 20-9 loss this time around. Otterbein wins a postseason game for the second year in a row and now advances to the semifinals next at top seed Capital.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was all Otterbein from the opening draw, as the hosts built a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and kept the Yellow Jackets at arm's length the remainder of the way.

  • The Cards led 11-1 midway through the second quarter but BW didn't allow the running clock to last much at all…

  • The visitors scored three-straight times entering halftime (only down 11-4) and then trailed just 12-6 by the midway point of the third quarter.

  • Otterbein, behind leading scorer Emily Willms, regrouped to create separation moving forward. The Cardinals' top gun scored four times herself in a 5-0 stretch for the team… including a goal just 11 seconds into the final quarter to seal all momentum.

NOTABLE STATS:
  • Willms, who broke Otterbein's single-game record with 10 goals the first time against BW, roped in another eight to lead the way. She now has 73 this season.

  • Lexie Van Cleef scored four times while Macey Buchanan and Carli Rigel both tallied hat tricks. Buchanan surpassed 100 points for her career in the process.

  • Otterbein held a 19-13 edge in draw controls, sparked by a dozen from Rigel herself.

  • The Cards were a very efficient 5 of 7 on free-position attempts.

  • Maggie Nance made nine saves and helped begin the clear nicely, where Otterbein finished a near-perfect 18 of 20 heading upfield.

RIVALRY REMATCH:

The Cardinals will get a second crack at their cross-town rival after dropping a 19-8 decision to the undefeated Comets at the beginning of April. Capital won the OAC regular-season title and currently stands with a perfect 17-0 record.
