GAMBIER, Ohio – Women's Soccer claimed a road win during non-conference action Tuesday against Kenyon College, and continues striding upwards with back-to-back wins over the last four days.
Otterbein and Kenyon have had multiple meetings since 2008 and, with today's victory at Mavec Field, the Cards now sit 4-2-1 over the Owls in that span.
Â
As opposed to Saturday's contest where the Cards scored twice in the second half, Otterbein pressed early in Owl territory this time around with a variety of players creating great offensive opportunities. Simultaneously, the Otterbein defense stayed resilient the whole afternoon and didn't allow any of Kenyon's attempts to reach fruition.
Â
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
Â
- The Cards challenged the Owl's defense early by winning back-to-back corner kicks, one of which set the scene for Otterbein's first goal. After a long cross, Gillian Losey looked to put the ball back into play. Despite being marked by two Kenyon defenders, Losey sent the ball back into the 18-yard box. Kesley Louderback attempted to volley off the cross, but Bailey Zanella found the ricocheted ball and finished the job with a left-footed shot.
Â
- Otterbein's second goal followed quickly behind with Losey and Zanella taking part in another sequence. This time, Morgan Somers set the play up when she shook her defender with a quick turn and crossed the ball towards the middle. Bailey Zanella challenged a Kenyon player and put just enough space between the ball and the defender for Losey to quickly chip a shot over Kenyon keeper Leah Anderson.
Â
- Back-to-back Kenyon yellow cards in the 20th minute created a free kick opportunity for Otterbein. Payton Kaufman took the set piece about ten yards behind the half-field line and sent a long ball into the heart of Owl territory. A perfect bounce over the Kenyon defensive line led Lauren Alley to a showdown with the keeper. Alley was just a step quicker than Anderson and volleyed the ball over her hands to score (what would be) the final goal of the match.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Â
- The Owls actually out-shot the Cardinals 17-6 overall, firing off nine in the second half compared to none for Otterbein. But the teams split shots on frame at four each, as Otterbein was ultimately more accurate with its attempts by finishing a trio.
Â
- Ella Schwertfager and Caitlin Drew each covered a half in goal for the Cardinals, making one and three saves respectively.
Â
- The 17 shots produced by Kenyon were spread out evenly throughout their starting lineup, as five different Owls had multiple attempts.
Â
