CLEVELAND, Ohio – It was a tough result on the scoreboard, but the Otterbein women's soccer team will look to keep progressing after a 4-0 setback at the hands of No. 12-ranked Case Western Reserve up north Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans, recently beating Capital by a 4-2 count in their season opener, are coming off a season in which they went 16-2-2 overall and made/hosted the NCAA Sweet 16.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
- CWRU started strong and ended strong, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes of the day and then adding another two in the closing 15.
Â
- The Spartans took the lead for good when Kati Davis received a pass at the top of the box and was able to finish into the lower-left corner. Just four minutes later, Helena VanBibber took a pass on her run into the box and slipped in a shot lower right.
Â
- Otterbein went with multiple substitutions about seven minutes later (almost midway through the half), but Case Western also stayed fresh and maintained the multi-goal edge heading into the break.
Â
- The Cards kept pushing forward and trying to hit the scoreboard following a talk at intermission. Freshman Rae Ehbar, scoring in her college debut this past week, had one shot blocked and another saved in the 67th minute. Bailey Zanella then lofted a header that hit the crossbar around the 81:23 mark.
Â
- Case Western added a pair of insurance goals down the stretch, the first coming in the 79th minute and another with less than six minutes to play in regulation.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- CWRU finished with a 21-8 advantage in total shots, including a 10-2 difference in the first half. The Spartans also held a 9-4 edge on frame.
Â
- Ella Schwertfager went the distance in goal again for the Cards (making five saves), while Maggie Storti came up with four on the opposite end for the hosts.
Â
- Case Western has now taken two-straight meetings in this series after a back-and-forth 3-2 decision last year in Westerville. Otterbein had won the meeting prior to that way back in 2010.
Â
MOVING FORWARD:
- The Cardinals will return home and have 72 hours to regroup before another non-conference road match, this time a little closer at nearby Ohio Wesleyan come Wednesday at 7 p.m.
