WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Cardinals' women's lacrosse team came up short in a high-scoring affair with the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan to cap a Saturday doubleheader at Memorial Stadium.

The two schools, separated by roughly 15 miles, had multiple players reunited with high school teammates on opposites sides of the field this time. The intensity across 60 minutes certainly reflected the relevance.

How It Went Down:

  • Senior middie Lauren Newkirk opened the scoring floodgate just 30 seconds into the game. She then assisted the second goal to junior Carli Rigel, who finished with a nifty backhand.

  • Newkirk and Rigel shared a scoring connection, assisting each other's goals on three separate occasions.

  • OWU led 7-4 at halftime before an offensive uptick in the second half.

  • Otterbein only trailed 9-8 midway through the third before an 8-3 run by the visitors created too much separation. Two quick goals to start the fourth for the Bishops (and three in the span of a minute) swayed the game.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Both Rigel and Newkirk would record hat tricks with four and three goals, respectively. Granville's Newkirk also added four assists to her stat line for a seven-point day overall, moving over 100 for her career.

  • Ohio Wesleyan capitalized on half of its first six free-position attempts, while the Cardinals only made one on the same number of chances.

  • Carli Rigel had five points while Ava Robey and Riley Smith each scored twice. Robey found the back of the net for the first time in her college career.

  • Both goalies made double-digit saves despite the offensive showings, with Maggie Nance securing 11 on the Otterbein side.

What's Next:

The Cardinals hit the road for the first time this year, traveling to Springfield to take on Wittenberg's Tigers on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
