HOLLAND, Mich. – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team played Hope College dead even in the first and fourth quarters, but the hosts used a lopsided margin in the middle portion to create enough of a gap to win 16-6 at Van Andel Stadium.
The Cardinals fall to 3-3 on the year with the result after the third-ever meeting between the schools. Hope grabs its second win over an Ohio Athletic Conference school this season following a 15-14 (overtime) triumph against league power Mount Union earlier this month.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
- Both sides traded goals early, with Otterbein leading 3-2 near the end of the first quarter after Emily Willms, Ava Robey and Riley Smith (man-up) found the back of the net.
Â
- Hope scored with 24 seconds left in the first quarter and parlayed that momentum into a huge second, posting five goals in the frame to carry an 8-4 edge into the break.
Â
- The Flying Dutch scored all six goals in the third quarter and ballooned its lead to 15-4 to begin the fourth, all part of a lopsided 13-1 run stretching from the late first period.
Â
- Willms scored twice more in the fourth quarter to help shrink the final margin just a bit.
Â
STATS THAT MATTERED:
- Willms tied for a game-high four goals, moving into second on Otterbein's all-time scoring list in the process. She now has 176 points for her career and passes former standout Annie Kelly (173).
Â
- Hope went 14 of 16 on clear attempts while the Cards weren't quite as efficient, going just 13 of 23 in the category.
Â
- Lauren Newkirk finished with three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two assists.
Â
- Juli Kirkpatrick and Molly Frederickson combined to score seven goals for the home side.
Â
- Goalie Maggie Nance made 12 saves for the Cardinals, her third game in double digits this season.
Â
UP NEXT:
- Otterbein stays on the road to begin next week, traveling to Franciscan University in Steubenville.
