ALLIANCE, Ohio – It was yet another high-scoring matchup between Otterbein and Mount Union on the women's lacrosse field Saturday afternoon, but this one also went in favor of the Purple Raiders in the form of a narrow 17-14 decision at Kehres Stadium.
The Cardinals, playing with just one sub yet again, battled admirably to score 10 goals in the second half before running out of time late. Mount Union (11-3, 6-0 OAC) clinches at least a share of the regular-season title and can win outright next week against Baldwin Wallace.
This marks yet another shootout between the two sides as the last four matchups have seen 31, 28, 31 and 37 combined goals respectively.
NOTABLE STRETCHES:
- Both teams found the back of the net four times in the first quarter, but Mount held Otterbein off the board in the second to create an 8-4 lead by halftime.
Â
- The Cardinals tried their best to weather that 7-0 run by the home side and eventually found more scoring after the break.
Â
- Otterbein scored six times in just the third period, including a three-goal run by Emily Willms herself midway through.
Â
- The Cards tallied three of the game's last four goals on the day and felt some momentum, but there just wasn't enough time on the clock to push any further.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Mount Union held a slim 35-33 shot margin.
Â
- Willms (7) and Logan Fox (4) combined for 11 goals and 10 draw controls.
Â
- Maggie Nance had nine saves while a pair of Raiders teamed for the same amount in the opposite cage.
Â
- Lauren Newkirk had more than one goal, ground ball and caused turnover.
Â
- The Raiders won 20 of 35 draws and received hat tricks from three different players.
Â
UP NEXT:
- The Cards will begin tackling final exams this coming week and host Ohio Northern in the regular-season finale Wednesday at 7 p.m. It will also be Senior Night!
