Nance Makes 18 Saves in Quarterfinal Win at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – It marked a revenge game for the Otterbein women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon on the road, this time with much more on the line as the Cardinals visited Marietta for a second meeting between the schools in 10 days.

The No. 4 seeded Pioneers, earning the right to host an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament quarterfinal game after eluding the Cardinals in overtime last week, couldn't slip nearly as much past Otterbein goalie Maggie Nance this time around.

As a result, the fifth-seeded Cardinals prevailed 12-7 to keep their season alive. They will now advance to the OAC semifinal round this coming Wednesday at regular-season champ Mount Union.

WHAT TO KNOW:
  • Nance delivered a magical effort to lead the way, making a career-high 18 saves to keep the home offense relatively silent.

  • Senior Emily Willms led all players with five goals to become Otterbein's new all-time scoring leader. She passes former standout Tory Blatt (2012-15) to now stand alone with 226 points… and counting.

  • Otterbein was a perfect 19 for 19 on clear attempts, successfully advancing the ball upfield in transition.

  • The Cards were a very efficient 6 of 9 on free-position attempts while Nance held the Pios to just a 2 of 9 output in the same category.

  • Logan Fox tallied a hat trick for the sixth time in last seven outings.

KEY STRETCHES:
  • Carlie Rigel converted a man-up goal within the first 90 seconds of the day but Marietta settled in, holding a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

  • Otterbein posted a 3-1 scoring edge in the second frame, culminated on a timely goal from Lauren Newkirk with just 42 seconds left before halftime.

  • The Cardinals created a difference-making stretch with a huge third quarter, blitzing Marietta with a 5-1 run punctuated on a rope from Logan Fox with nine seconds on the board.

  • That 10-5 cushion was more than enough for Nance and the defense, as each side traded a pair of goals down the stretch of the fourth.

REMATCH WITH THE RAIDERS:
  • The Cardinals will now strive for another piece of potential revenge come next weekend, heading back to Mount Union after recently dropping a 17-14 game with the top seed.
