WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was a Sunday Funday inside Memorial Stadium for the Otterbein women's soccer team, which added another tally to the win column by turning back Mount St. Joseph 2-0 in non-conference action.
The Cardinals, off a rugged draw at Hanover while playing undermanned, finish off the week unscathed and now stand 4-1-2 this season. MSJ is now 2-4-2 overall.
Both sides resumed the series after last playing in 2016, and Otterbein wasted no time making its presence known with both goals in the opening five minutes. The Cards ended up holding a 25-8 shot advantage for the day as a whole.
The scoring began just over two minutes into the contest with a senior-to-senior connection.
Morgan Somers grabbed possession around midfield, took a few touches and then sent a long pass up the gut to a streaking classmate.
Anjuli Anderson was there to get behind a Lion defender, get a first touch before the charging goalkeeper, and finish on the open net.
Less than three minutes later, the Cardinals earned a corner kick and doubled up their lead on a broken sequence. A loose ball in the box took a few quick turns before sophomore
Rae Ehrbar was there to clean it up in traffic.
Otterbein had ample other opportunities in the match to extend its margin, but the MSJ defense fought to keep the final decision at just a two-goal margin. Megan Kallmeyer had five saves in the visitor net, including one on a penalty kick.
Sophomore keepers
Ella Schwertfager and
Caitlin Drew split time in goal for the Cardinals, each making two stops for the team's fourth clean sheet this fall.
The Cardinals will play their final non-conference match of the year on Wednesday, capping a doubleheader with the men's team against Denison. First kick is scheduled for (roughly) 7:30 p.m.
