WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A late goal by graduate transfer
Cailynn Adelman helped the Cardinals salvage a draw Tuesday afternoon under the hot sun of Memorial Stadium, where Otterbein clawed tooth and nail down the stretch to deadlock Trine.
The Cardinals, playing behind for 30 minutes of the second half, move to 1-0-1 on the young schedule. Trine now holds a 1-0-2 record as it looks to build off making the MIAA Championship contest last fall.
KEY MOMENTS:
- Otterbein seemed primed to jump ahead midway through the first half after a foul in the box, but Anjuli Anderson's penalty kick was nicely saved by Thunder keeper Sophie Aschemeier.
- Trine saw its best chance of the frame just before intermission on a free kick from the left/far side. The ball made it through the box and toward a teammate around the far post, but a Cardinal defender was there to quickly get a body in front.
- The Thunder jumped ahead shortly into the second half on a corner-kick sequence. An initial shot was cleared off the line by Otterbein defender Kylie Hast, but the ball was redirected back in by Trine's Bella Mabry. Her teammate (Abby Robison) was there to deliver a nice back-heel kick that soared up into the net.
- Otterbein saw a few chances moving forward, including a shot from Bailey Zanella and through-ball look from Adelman to Anjuli Anderson. Both chances went empty and Trine still led entering the homestretch.
- Down but not out, Anderson found space down in the right corner and lofted a cross into box with under four minutes remaining. Adelman, playing just her second game for the Cards after a D1 undergraduate career with American and Ohio University, promptly buried a header inside the near post for an equalizer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Cardinals finished with a doubled-up shot margin of 12-6, with seven of those looks winding up on frame.
- Aschemeier made six saves for the visitors.
- Both sides rotated in plenty off the bench during a match that saw 90-degree temperatures, and likely hotter on the actual turf. A total of 15 subs came on at various point.
- Otterbein attempted all four of its corner kicks in the second half.
UP NEXT:
- The Cardinals stay at home this weekend to conclude a three-game homestand, welcoming Chatham on Saturday at 5 p.m.
