Women's Soccer draws against undefeated conference leader John Carroll

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against conference leader John Carroll, who remains undefeated, in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. Junior Rae Ehrbar scored for the Cardinals to level the match.

  • Records: Otterbein (8-4-5 overall, 3-2-3 OAC), John Carroll (11-5-1 overall, 7-0-1 OAC)

The Game
  • Despite Otterbein out-shooting the Blue Streaks in the first half, John Carroll capitalized on a goalkeeper deflection to score the opening goal, taking the lead in the ninth minute.
  • The Cardinals came out strong after halftime, as Ehrbar danced her way around multiple defenders to equalize the match with a goal in the 50th minute.
  • Otterbein made a determined effort to add another goal, taking 12 shots after their equalizer, with seven on target, but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • The Blue Streaks managed only 10 shots, with five on target, while the Cards doubled that effort with 25 shots and 13 on target. 
  • The singular yellow card of the game was given to John Carroll's head coach. 
  • Junior Ella Schwertfager played the full 90 minutes, making four saves in goal for Otterbein.

Notables

  • Ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Region VII rankings, John Carroll remains atop the conference standings. Otterbein is tied with Heidelberg for fourth place with a head-to-head matchup upcoming on Saturday in Tiffin. The top six teams in the standings qualify for next week's OAC Tournament, with the top two teams receiving a first-round bye.
  • Ehrbar's goal was her fourth of the season and the sixth of her career.
  • Otterbein is now 14-3-3 against John Carroll since 2007. The Cardinals won six straight meetings from 2017 to 2022 before falling 1-0 to the Blue Streaks last season.
  • Head coach Brandon Koons, now in his 26th year at Otterbein, holds an all-time record of 346-106-47 with the Cardinals.
