Cardinals Take Down Polar Bears in Quarterfinal

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein Women's Lacrosse powered past Ohio Northern in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals, following a commanding first half performance. Carli Rigel also adding two more milestones to further enhance her career resume.
 
Seeded third, the Cardinals breezed past the sixth-seeded Polar Bears with a 18-9 final score, highlighted by Otterbein's 13-goal performance in the first half.
 
Rigel achieved a milestone by scoring her 200th career point tonight and becoming the third player in program history to achieve this feat. Additionally, she has now become the All-Time Draw Control Leader for the program, surpassing Emily Willms' previous record of 209 with Rigel reaching 213 draws.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
  • Otterbein asserted its dominance by netting four goals in the initial five minutes of the first quarter, with Alyssa Glen contributing two of them.
     
  • The Cardinals took advantage of Ohio Northern's clears, which were only successful 2 out of 5 times. This led to three more goals being added to end the first quarter, with Maggie Nance and the defense to allow just one goal.
     
  • In the second quarter, Otterbein managed to score six additional goals, with half of them coming from the duo of Rigel and Ava Robey.
     
  • In the first half, the Otterbein defense limited their opponents to just 8 shots, while Otterbein took more than double that number with 18 attempts of their own.
     
  • The Cardinals added five more goals in the final quarters and allowed the Polar Bears to score five unanswered goals before ending the game with an 18-9 scoreline.
 
GIVE THE STATS, COACH:
  • Ohio Northern was the sole team to be issued penalty cards, receiving a total of five cards.
     
  • Otterbein successfully completed 18 out of 19 clears and converted all three of their free-position shots.
     
  • Otterbein took 29 shots as 26 of which were on goal, while Ohio Northern had 14 shots with all them on goal.
     
  • Rigel led the team with five goals, along with five ground balls and eight draw controls and ending the game with nine points.
     
  • Alyssa Glen and Courtney Costello each scored three goals, with Costello achieving a season-high tally.
     
  • Robey and Fox had a combined four goals and five draw controls.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:

The Cardinals are set to advance to the OAC tournament semifinals and will travel to Alliance to face Mount Union on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
