Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot start continues for men's basketball, Cards move to 4-0

WOOSTER, Ohio – Julian Heckman's dominant second half led the Otterbein University men's basketball team to an 87-73 victory over SUNY-Brockport on Friday night. Heckman led all players with 19 points – 15 coming in the second half – while adding seven assists.

Freshman Dominic Theado turned in a career-best 18 points, as Micah Germany was the third Cardinal in double figures, scoring 15 points. The sophomore knocked down three 3-pointers in the game.

The Cardinals jumped out to a fast start, leading 9-0 less than four minutes in. The Golden Eagles settled in as the teams traded blows throughout the first half. As Brockport continued to chip away, they took a late lead in the first half. A putback from Heckman as time expired ended the opening period, seeing the teams knotted up at 41.

Out of the break, Germany and Chase Garito got things going for Otterbein, as the duo combined for the team's first 11 points. The Golden Eagles continued to pressure Otterbein, with the teams tied at 58 with just over 10 minutes remaining. That ignited a small run by the Cardinals, leading but never at a comfortable distance.

With 2:35 to play, Garito corralled an offensive rebound and found Germany on the kickout. Germany knocked down the dagger triple to push the Cardinals up by 11, as Otterbein continued to make free throws down the stretch.

Heckman's 19 points came on an incredibly efficient shooting night, going 7 of 9. As a team, Otterbein shot 57 percent from the floor and 41 percent from beyond the arc. The Cardinals dominated the paint, outsourcing Brockport 48-28 inside.

This is Otterbein's first 4-0 start since the historic 2001-02 season.

The Cardinals will close out the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic tomorrow with a contest against SUNY-Geneseo. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. in Wooster.
