Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball knocks off Geneseo to remain unbeaten

WOOSTER, Ohio – Four players finished in double figures lifting the Otterbein University men's basketball team to a 5-0 start following an 83-72 victory over SUNY-Geneseo at the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic.

Jarius Jones paced Otterbein with 16 points off the bench. Sophomore Micah Germany contributed 15 points – all coming from beyond the arc – on a 5 of 9 shooting performance. Julian Heckman added 10 points and seven assists, his third consecutive game with at least seven dimes.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Heckman and Germany were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Heckman claiming MVP honors.

In the first half, neither team was able to seize momentum, as the largest lead was eight points held by Otterbein late in the period. The Knights immediately answered by scoring the game's next five points, but Otterbein took a slim 36-32 lead into the half.

The Cardinals opened the second half on a 10-3 run over the first three minutes, extending the lead to double digits. After a 3-pointer from the Knights, Dominic Theado scored an old-fashioned three-point play to shift the momentum fully in Otterbein's favor. The freshman forced a turnover at the other end before knocking down a triple to push the Cardinals ahead, 46-35. Theado scored 12 points on an efficient 5 of 6 shooting effort.

With eight minutes remaining, Mason Stuck drained a three to increase the Otterbein advantage to 19 points. Geneseo continued to chip away at the double digit lead, trimming the deficit to nine points with 1:46 to play. Down the stretch, freshman Noah Knostman was a perfect 4 for 4 at the foul line to ice the game and send the Cardinals home with their second win in as many days.

Heckman and Germany combined for seven steals, while Chase Garito contributed a solid nine points and five rebounds, four on the offensive glass. Otterbein shot just under 52 percent from the floor and was 14 of 16 at the foul line. Taking advantage of Knight miscues, the Cardinals turned 17 Geneseo turnovers into 28 points.

Otterbein returns home on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tip against Denison University.
