Women's hoops starts conference play with road win

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Backed by Mattie Walburn's 20-point performance, the Otterbein University women's basketball team started Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 61-53 win over the University of Mount Union. The Cardinals improve to 5-2 overall and start conference action 1-0.

Otterbein started out hot, ending the final four minutes of the opening period on an 11-1 run. Sophomore Kiara Hudgins ignited the run with a jumper before Abby Rawlings buried a three to give Otterbein an 11-8 lead. Walburn scored the final six points of the quarter to push Otterbein to a 17-9 advantage at the end of one quarter.

In the second, Mount Union cut the Otterbein lead to three points, but the Cardinals were able to silence the Purple Raiders. A Walburn jumper was followed by a defensive stop. On the ensuing possession, Kate Mosher found Hudgins for a 3-pointer, inflating the Cardinal lead to 28-20. Capping off the 8-0 run, Walburn sank another bucket and Nicole Terry made a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 32-20 lead at halftime.

Despite the Purple Raiders cutting Otterbein's lead to four points with 4:42 to play, the Cardinals were able to fend off the hosts. Down the stretch, Otterbein was a perfect 6 of 6 from the charity stripe, as Walburn, Hudgins and Kyla Irby sank free throws in that stretch.

Walburn was Otterbein's lone scorer in double figures, while Cameron Sparks and Irby each scored nine. Sparks was the leading rebounder, hauling in eight boards. Rawlings led the team with four assists.

From the foul line, the Cardinals shot 81 percent (13 of 16) compared to Mount Union's 47 percent (8 for 17).

Otterbein will host Heidelberg next Saturday, December 13 at 1 p.m.
