Four Cardinals qualify for Nationals as Women's Wrestling takes fifth at NCWWC Region 4 Championships

TIFFIN — Senior Olivia Shore won her weight class title as four Cardinals qualified for the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships, with the Otterbein women's wrestling team finishing fifth at the NCWWC Region 4 Championships in Tiffin on Saturday. Freshmen Grace Murphy, Rylee Touhalisky and Hailey Hatfield joined Shore as national qualifiers and All-Region honorees courtesy of their top-four finishes in their respective weight classes.

  • Venue: Heminger Center - Tiffin, Ohio
  • The top four placers in each weight class earn All-Region honors and will advance to the NCWWC National Championships in Coralville, Iowa, on March 7-8.
  • Otterbein scored 74.5 points and placed fifth of 12 teams. Gannon (Pa.) won the event with 144.5 points. Frostburg State (Md.) was second with 118.5 points, and Tiffin was third with 108.5 points.
  • Otterbein is No. 14 in this week's Team Tournament Rankings from The Open Mat. Gannon is No. 16, and Tiffin is No. 23.
  • In the latest Team Tournament Top 25 from the NWCA, which was released on Feb. 7, Tiffin is No. 15, Otterbein is No. 17 and Gannon is No. 24.

Otterbein Individual Highlights
  • 103: Shore claimed her fourth weight class title of the season, qualifying for the NCWWC Nationals and scoring 20.5 team points for Otterbein. She started strong with a quick fall over Charvi Bethu (Frostburg State) in just 18 seconds. In the semifinals, she kept the momentum going, winning by a 10-0 tech fall over Kyleigh Honaker (Manchester) in three minutes. Olivia secured her title with a 1:35 fall against Juliana Alejandro (Tiffin University) in the championship match, further solidifying her impressive 18-1 season record.
  • 103: Freshman Kellie Kennedy began strong in the opening round, securing a quick fall over Chloe Kitagawa (Gannon University) in just 15 seconds. However, in the quarterfinals, she was pinned by Juliana Alejandro (Tiffin University) in 18 seconds. In the consolation rounds, Kennedy received a bye in Round 2 before being pinned by Abigail Alvarado (Manchester) in 2:48 during Round 3.
  • 110: Touhalisky is the second Cardinal to qualify for Nationals, earning 4th place and scoring 13.5 team points.She opened the tournament with a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Touhalisky pinned Callie Helton (Baldwin Wallace) in 1:33. In the semifinals, she suffered a loss by tech fall to Katerina Pendergrass (Gannon University) in 1:18. Touhalisky bounced back in the consolation semifinals, securing a fall over Jackeline Shackleford (Manchester) in 1:11. In the 3rd place match, she was pinned by Kylee Bentley (Hiram) in 2:02. Her final match for 4th place ended with a win by no contest over Callie Helton (Baldwin Wallace). 
  • 117: Hatfield is the third Cardinal to qualify for Nationals, after placing 4th and scoring 15.0 team points. She started the tournament with a medical forfeit victory over Jaelyn Collins (Hiram). In the quarterfinals, Hatfield secured a fall over Aubrey Filsinger (Mount Union) in 1:39.In the semifinals, she was pinned by Brenna McCarley (Gannon University) in 4:55. However, Hatfield bounced back in the consolation semifinals, winning by tech fall over Katalyn Dowell (Manchester) with a dominant 10-0 score in 1:38. In the 3rd place match, Hatfield was defeated by Lexi Doerflinger (Hiram) in a 10-0 tech fall in 1:01. Hatfield ended her tournament with a win by no contest over Katalyn Dowell (Manchester) in the 4th place match.
  • 124: Freshman Raegan Briggs began with a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Briggs suffered a medical forfeit loss to Cynthia Pyatt (West Liberty). In the consolation rounds, she faced Delaney Burns (John Carroll) and was again forced to forfeit due to injury, ending her tournament early.
  • 124: Freshman Emmy Caton scored 3.0 team points as she started the tournament strong with a fall over Delaney Burns (John Carroll) in 3:40. In the quarterfinals, Caton was pinned by Sienna Sanborn (Tiffin University) in 1:20. In the consolation round, Caton faced Paola Villarruel (Manchester) and was defeated by tech fall, 10-0, in just 36 seconds. 
  • 131: Freshman Izzy Samczuk earned 3.0 team points after starting the tournament with a fall loss to Solana Mottola (Frostburg State) in 1:23. In the consolation rounds, Samczuk bounced back with a 7-6 decision victory over Zoe Gaetjens (Gannon University) in the first round. She followed that with a fall over Hallie Green (John Carroll) in 2:30 in the second round. However, in the third consolation round, Samczuk was pinned by Lexi Beadle (Baldwin Wallace) in 1:59, ending her tournament.
  • 131: Freshman Madison Sheehan started the tournament with a fall loss to Hallie Green (John Carroll) in 1:30. In the consolation rounds, she received a bye in the first round but was then pinned by Erin Scully (Trine) in 0:47 during the second round, concluding her tournament.
  • 207: Murphy is the final Cardinal to qualify, earning 3rd place and scoring 19.5 team points in the tournament. She started strong with a 1:18 fall over Kayla Mena (Hiram) in the first round and followed it up with another quick pin, this time in 0:48 over Mackenzie Weatherford (Manchester) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Murphy was pinned by Lyndsee Young (Mount Union) in just 28 seconds. She regrouped in the consolation semifinals, securing a fall over her teammate, sophomore Marvet Hejazin, in 3:49. Murphy then finished strong, clinching her 3rd place finish with a 0:41 fall over Jamie Shapton (West Liberty) in the final match.
  • 207: Sophomore Marvet Hejazin earned 6th place in the tournament. After receiving a bye in the first round, she faced Jamie Shapton (West Liberty) in the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by tech fall, 10-0, in 4:59. In the consolation rounds, Hejazin bounced back with a 10-0 tech fall victory over Ashton Francis (Trine) in 4:24. She followed up with a dominant 9-0 decision over Emily Jirousek (Mount Union) in the third round. In the consolation semifinals, Hejazin was pinned by her teammate Murphy in 3:49. In the 5th place match, she lost to Gabby Kennedy (Baldwin Wallace) by decision, 7-2, securing 6th place to end her tournament.
