Women's lacrosse drops hard-fought matchup to DePauw

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University women's lacrosse team suffered a tough one-goal loss Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium, falling 14–13 to DePauw University.

DePauw jumped out early, but the Cardinals settled in and answered with two goals in the final four minutes of the opening quarter. Freshmen Leela Henry and Dakota Klein each converted on man-up chances during that stretch to help Otterbein pull even at 3–3, before the Tigers slipped in a late shorthanded goal to take a 4–3 edge after one.

The Tigers carried the momentum into the second quarter and stretched the lead to 8–3, but Otterbein responded late with three goals in the final 5:30 to close the gap heading into halftime. Klein scored with 5:30 remaining, Henry added another with 57 seconds left, and senior Ava Robey buried a man-down goal off a feed from junior Alyssa Glenn with three seconds on the clock to make it 8–6 at the break.

Otterbein continued to battle in the third quarter, getting goals from Glenn and Robey to keep within striking distance. After DePauw built a three-goal cushion, Otterbein answered with a late Robey finish in the closing seconds to pull within 12–10 heading into the final 15 minutes.

In the fourth, Otterbein tied the contest twice and briefly grabbed the lead late. Freshman Karley Gerst opened the scoring for the Cardinals before Klein's free-position goal evened things at 12–12 with 6:10 remaining. Robey then scored with 2:59 left to give Otterbein a 13–12 advantage, but DePauw answered with goals at the 32-second mark and with four seconds remaining to escape with the 14–13 win.

Robey led the Cardinals with four goals and one assist, while Glenn totaled three goals and one assist. Klein finished with three goals, and Henry added two goals and an assist. Glenn also paced Otterbein with six caused turnovers and six draw controls, while sophomore Alayna Bogner made 12 saves.

Otterbein returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28, hosting Hanover College at 1 p.m. in non-conference play.
