Cardinals drop two close games in WPI twinbill

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Another pair of tight decisions did not go in favor of the Otterbein University baseball team, as the Cardinals were swept by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday afternoon. WPI took the opener 4-2 before an extra inning victory in the nightcap, 3-2.

GAME ONE: WPI 4 Otterbein 2 (7 innings)

In the second inning, WPI got on the board with an unearned run after a wild pitch. WPI extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth after a sacrifice fly and another Cardinal wild pitch. Otterbein got on the board in the home half of the inning, as freshman Geoffrey Siess led off the inning with a walk. Moving into scoring position after a sac bunt and heads up baserunning, Siess scored when the speedy Calvin Mabry legged out an infield single with two away.

WPI plated a much-needed insurance run in the top of the seventh to build a 4-1 advantage. A second unearned run came around to score for the Engineers. Daniel Uhl started the seventh-inning rally with a walk and later scored when Braylon Boggs smacked a single through the left side. The rally ended with a lineout, securing the 4-1 win for WPI.

Mabry led Otterbein with two hits and a pair of RBI. The sophomore also swiped three bags in the loss. On the bump, Maverick Rabe tossed 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing a pair of unearned runs while striking out four.

GAME TWO: WPI 3 Otterbein 2 (8 innings)

Despite rallying to tie the score in the seventh, the Engineers broke the hearts of the Cardinals in walkoff fashion in game two. WPI plated runs in the fifth and sixth to hold a slim 2-0 lead headed into the final inning.

Otterbein utilized a two-out rally to tie the game at 2-2. After a fielder's choice, Mabry worked a walk to push Boggs to second. The two advanced 90 feet after a wild pitch to put a pair in scoring position for Cam Fisher. The freshman delivered in clutch fashion, smoking a single up the middle to drive home Boggs and Mabry. Fisher swiped second and third, as Jack Barber and Nolan James worked walks, but the Cardinals stranded the bases loaded.

After the Cardinals could not cash in with two more runners aboard in the eighth, WPI drove in the winning run in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice.

James was 2 for 3 for the Cardinals, as Anthony Dunlap also recorded a pair of hits. Four Cardinals recorded stolen bases, but as a team Otterbein left 11 runners on base.

Freshman Darren Ramsey was strong on the mound, firing six innings, allowing three hits and two runs – one earned. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Tomorrow, Otterbein concludes its trip with a 9 a.m. first pitch against Immaculata.
