COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions: Athletics

This page has been designed to help answer questions regarding how athletics might be affected for the 2020-21 calendar year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For topics related to the university as a whole, please access the RETURN TO CAMPUS MAIN PAGE and also the STUDENT FAQ SHEET.

UPDATED 12/14:

What is the current status of fall sports?

The Ohio Athletic Conference has delayed all competitions until January of 2021. Our teams will still be meeting and preparing to compete when it is safe to do so. The OAC is committed to a spring schedule for all delayed sports — the season is delayed, not canceled.

How is eligibility affected if my sport doesn't play?
NCAA Division III has issued a blanket waiver, which allows student-athletes to compete up to the established dates of competition/contest maximums without being charged a season of intercollegiate participation or a term of attendance for any term (semester/quarter) during the 2020-21 academic year in which they are eligible for competition.

Can I still work out in the Rike and Clements Recreation Center?
Yes. Both buildings will be open for Otterbein students, faculty and staff. Machines/stations will be spaced out and it will be required to wipe down areas BEFORE and AFTER using.

Do I have to wear a mask while exercising?
No. You do not need to wear a mask while working out, but are still required to wear a face covering upon entering, exiting and transitioning throughout the facility.

Are locker rooms open?
No. Locker rooms and showers will generally be closed, although restrooms are available for changing purposes.

Are student-athletes allowed to access the athletic training room?
Yes. However, you will first need to make contact through our electronic system (Healthy Roster) to schedule an appointment. Be prepared to complete a daily COVID-19 screening at the door upon entering.

If attendance is still prohibited/limited at home games come January, will fans still be able to watch?
Yes. Almost all home games for almost all sports are typically broadcast live through our Boxcast platform. Individual event links are generated on a weekly basis and posted to the sport-specific schedule pages. Contests can also be viewed on oac.boxcast.com or by downloading the OAC TV app.

How many people are/will be allowed at campus events?
Events will be assessed through the league office/council and in accordance with the latest CDC, Ohio Department of Health and Franklin County Public Health guidelines. Distribution of tickets and passes will be determined at a later date if/when circumstances change.
