TIFFIN, OHIO – The Otterbein University women’s basketball team notched an Ohio Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening, defeating Heidelberg University 67-65 in Tiffin.
The victory moves the Cardinals to 11-13 on the season and 7-10 in conference play, while the loss drops Heidelberg to 1-23 overall, 0-17 in league play.
Otterbein will be the eighth seed in the upcoming OAC tournament, and will travel to take top-seeded University of Mount Union.
The Berg’ held an early 12-11 lead, and pushed its advantage to 17-11 by the 9:22 mark.
Otterbein answered with an 11-2 run to take a 22-19 lead, but the Student Princes stood strong and went into halftime with a slim 30-29 lead.
The Cards took a 42-39 lead at the 13:22 mark of the second half, and the game saw its tenth tie at 45-45 with 9:59 to play.
The game remained close in back-and-forth action down the stretch, with Otterbein taking its biggest lead at 56-51 with just under six minutes to go.
Heidelberg responded to draw even at 62-62 with 1:24 to play, but a layup from Sarah Esterkamp on the ensuing Cardinal possession gave Otterbein the lead for good.
Junior Shea McCoy finished with a game-high 21 points while Kristi Kotterman scored 14.
Otterbein managed to make just 3-of-21 attempt from beyond the arc, but went 20-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Cards close out the regular season Saturday afternoon, traveling to play Wilmington College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
Wilmington used a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to escape Westerville with a 73-71 victory earlier this season.
