NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Otterbein University women’s basketball moved to 6-1 on the season Saturday afternoon, escaping Muskingum University with a 66-63 victory.
The Cardinals move to 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play as a result, dropping the Muskies to 3-6 this season, 0-3 in league play.
Otterbein next travels to take on No. 2 ranked University of Mount Union next Saturday afternoon in Alliance. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
The game was tied 30-30 at halftime, and remained a one-possession battle until Muskingum opened a 44-37 advantage with 11:42 remaining in regulation.
Otterbein hung close and eventually chipped away, tying the game at 52-52 after a pair of Chelsea Reed free throws as the clock moved under four minutes.
The Muskies held a 62-59 edge with 1:52 to play, but a layup from Hannah Day and sophomore
Madi Miller hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to give Otterbein a 63-61 lead.
Reed came up with a steal on the other end, and two makes at the line from sophomore Tabatha Piper would help the Cards leave victorious.
Piper led Otterbein with 16 points and game-highs of nine rebounds and four assists, while Day and Rachel Snedegar scored 14 and 10, respectively.
Senior Chelsea Cannon tallied nine points and seven boards for Otterbein, which held advantages in second-chance points (19 to 8), points off turnovers (22 to 13), and points in the paint (30 to 22).
Hannah Nelson paced the Muskie attack by dropping a game-best 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
