ADA, Ohio – The Cardinal women's basketball team was dealt a 60-41 loss Wednesday evening during Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action at Ohio Northern University.
Otterbein University, falling to 4-5 overall and 1-3 against league foes with the loss, will return to action Dec. 28-29 to host its annual Smokey Ballenger Classic in the Rike Center. Denison University, Misericordia University, and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will also take part in the event.
Otterbein started slow offensively at Northern, managing to score just eight points over the first nine minutes of action. The Cards eventually strung together successful possessions, outscoring the Polar Bears 11-2 over the next three-plus minutes to take a 19-15 lead.
Ohio Northern regrouped, finishing the half on a 12-4 to grab a 27-23 halftime lead.
The Polar Bears seized control in the second half, opening the period on a 13-4 scoring run to open a 40-27 edge. ONU would extend the lead to 20 by the 7:41 mark en route to victory.
Otterbein was limited to a 16 of 52 shooting night from the field, which included making just 1 of 11 shots from three-point range. Tabatha Piper and Amariah Huck each scored 10 to lead the Cards, with Huck also bringing down seven boards.
Jordan Kimes posted a double-double effort for the hosts, scoring 12 points and corralling a game-high 15 rebounds. No other Polar Bear scored in double figures.
Ohio Northern shot 5 of 19 from beyond the arc, but out-rebounded Otterbein, 45-30, and finished with a 17-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Otterbein will resume OAC play following the Ballenger Classic, traveling to Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, Jan. 4 for a 3 p.m. start time.
