BEREA, Ohio – A high-scoring Baldwin Wallace University team proved to be too much Saturday afternoon for Otterbein University, which suffered an 88-65 road loss to the Yellow Jackets in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.
The Cardinals, falling to 7-12 overall and 3-9 within the league, will return to action this coming Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears topped the Cardinals, 60-41, earlier this season in Ada.
Otterbein had an early 4-2 advantage after a Madi Miller layup, but that would be the only Cardinal lead of the day as BW quickly opened a 13-6 advantage before bumping the margin to double digits at the 8:35 mark of the first half.
Baldwin Wallac (14-5, 9-3 OAC) took a 37-26 lead into the break, but Otterbein fought to hang close and had the deficit at just nine with 14:27 to play in regulation. The Jackets regained control from that moment, out-scoring Otterbein 24-14 over the next seven minutes to open a 19-point lead and ultimately coast to victory.
Junior Mary Corbett and freshman Taylor Pifher scored 16 and 14, respectively, to lead the Otterbein attacked. Junior Tabatha Piper, back in the rotation after a two-game absence, came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight rebounds.
Audrey Smolik scored 14 points to pace a very balanced Baldwin Wallace offense, which shot 53 percent from the field and forced Otterbein into committing 21 turnovers.
The Cardinals finished at 48 percent from the floor, shot 5 of 12 from long distance and won the rebounding battle 30-29, but allowed BW to hold a 25-8 edge in points off turnovers.
