Cardinals Sweep Quakers, Still Perfect in League Play

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein University volleyball team maintained its perfect slate against Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opponents Tuesday night on the road, easing past host Wilmington College in straight sets by scores of 25-8, 25-20, 25-16.

The Cardinals, now 18-5 overall and 6-0 within the league, will turn their focus to an important tri-match Saturday afternoon inside the Rike Center with matches against Muskingum and No. 5-ranked Thomas More. The Muskies (21-3, 5-1 OAC) are currently tied for second place and one match back in the standings while TMC recently took down top-ranked Calvin in five sets.

Otterbein cruised to an early lead against Wilmington (6-18, 0-6 OAC), opening a 10-1 lead in the first set and never looking back.

The Cardinals, choosing to rest some starters and go with a different lineup to begin the second, found themselves behind 17-13 before calling a timeout to regroup. Otterbein kicked into gear from that moment, finishing the set on a 12-3 run and doubling up the match lead.

Both sides traded points throughout a close third set initially, which was tied at 13-13 by the midway point before Otterbein strung together another 12-3 run to close. Hadley Sterett and Tate Eppard each smashed nine kills to lead the offense while Alana King-Mendenhall added seven.

Setter Andrea Miller, among the national leaders in passing out dimes, posted 13 helpers in the first frame before giving way to freshman Dana Wynkoop. She added another 23 to finish the night.

Libero Ashlyn Leon had a match-high 14 digs in the shirt while Sterett just missed a double-double with nine of her own. Eppard contributed three blocks defensively at the net.

Otterbein will also honor Sterett, Miller, King-Mendenhall and fellow seniors Kalyn Schroer and Olivia Harris prior to the 3 p.m. match on Saturday for their contributions to the program since arrival.
