MARIETTA, Ohio – A whopping 16-match road stretch spanning the entire month of September came to a strong close Tuesday night, with the Cardinal volleyball team remaining hot in a three-set victory at host Marietta College.
Otterbein, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-15, runs its winning streak to 10 matches and now improves to 14-4 overall, 2-0 within the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The team has not dropped a set over the past five matches.
The Cardinals hosted a season-opening tournament on August 31 before renting buses left and right the past four weeks, and will now finally return to the Rike Center Saturday afternoon to host Baldwin Wallace at 1 p.m. BW currently stands 22-1 on the year after taking down No. 17-ranked Ohio Northern in straight sets Tuesday evening.
Otterbein took control inside Marietta's Ban Johnson Arena from the first set, breaking a 7-7 tie with a 7-0 run that was capped by a kill from sophomore middle
Tate Eppard. She ultimately finished the night with 11 kills and an even .400 hitting percentage.
The Cards used that momentum to take the first set, and then pulled away in a second frame that initially saw ties at 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14. Otterbein kicked into gear after the 14-14 deadlock to finish on an 11-1 scoring spurt in which setter
Andrea Miller served the final seven points. Miller had 38 assists for the second-straight outing and currently ranks top-10 nationally with 11 per set.
The third set featured an almost identical theme, with the schools tied at 11, 12 and 13 until another Otterbein flurry finished the job. The Cards ended on a 10-1 run, where Miller once again served the final seven points and senior outside hitter
Hadley Sterett punctuated the night with her match-best 14th kills.
Sterett, the reigning OAC Player of the Week, entered ranked eighth nationally in kills per set (4.37) and posted a 14-2-29 line to hit .414 overall. Youngsters
Emily Shuk and
Julia Vermilion both added eight kills to a Cardinal offense that swung a solid .340 collectively.
The Cards had 10 blocks together and three players reach double-digit digs;
Ashlyn Leon (16),
Hillary Sterett (11) and Miller (11). It was Miller sixth double-double of the fall.
Hunter Barnes had five kills to lead Marietta, which hit just .085 as a team and fell to 8-13 on the season.
