CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Otterbein wrestling team had four athletes in action on day two of the NCAA Division III Central Regional Saturday afternoon at Wabash College, ultimately getting its first national qualifier in program history.
Otterbein had three competitors make exits early in the day, with
Santino DiSabato (133),
Jake Vaughan (149) and heavyweight
Nate Temple all suffering elimination in their consolation matches.
The only Cardinal left standing by the afternoon was 197-pound sophomore
Drew Kasper, who was the top seed in his bracket and cruised into the semifinals after a pair of first-day victories. He quickly opened Saturday's action with an 11-6 decision over 19th-ranked Ken Burrs of Waynesburg, moving into the regional final.
Kasper then squared off in the championship round against Baldwin Wallace's Tyler Maclellan, ranked No. 15 in the country but also having lost a 12-5 decision to Kasper back in late January. Maclellan would narrowly emerge this time around with a 3-1 victory.
By virtue of finishing in the top-three, Kasper automatically earns a spot at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships schedule for March 9-10 in Cleveland. He is now 19-3 overall and will be the first Cardinal to ever represent at the event.
Otterbein tied for ninth of 18 total schools in the regional event as a whole, compiling 37.5 points despite not entering someone in two weight classes.
More information on the national tournament will be provided in the coming weeks.
