Women's Basketball Defeats Heidelberg in Tightly Contested Game

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Otterbein women's basketball team picked up its second victory over Heidelberg this season on Friday night by a score of 74-70, as Dani Kissel led the Cardinals with 25 points and Abbie Scholz chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Otterbein earns its second-straight win and improves to 10-7 on the year and 6-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while the Student Princes fall to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the league.

Both teams traded baskets in a high scoring first quarter, as Heidelberg led 24-22 after the first 10 minutes of action.  Otterbein continued with its consistent offense in the second period, but put more pressure on Heidelberg by forcing five turnovers and holding the opposition to 15 points.

The Cardinals went into the locker room leading 42-39 and shot 50 percent from both the floor and from behind the three-point arc.

Otterbein kept control of the game in the third quarter by building its lead to as much as nine points. Kissel connected on a jumper right before the buzzer sounded to give the Cardinals a 60-53 lead heading into the final period.

Brittanie Ulmer of Heidelberg connected on a three pointer with 5:07 remaining to give the Student Princes their first lead since the 2:20 mark in the second quarter.

Ali Cartnal drove the lane with nine seconds remaining but could not convert the layup, however Scholz was able to grab the offensive rebound and make the layup to give the Cardinals a four-point edge with seconds left.

Cartnal added 19 points, including four triples, and Angelia Jackson chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Otterbein will host Marietta Wednesday night inside the Rike Center at 7 p.m. in a crucial OAC contest between two teams that own a 6-4 record in the conference.
