Otterbein Stays Hot Despite the Cold, Beats JCU 3-1

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 18-ranked Otterbein women's soccer team stayed hot Wednesday evening despite it being perhaps the coldest day of fall season, jumping all over John Carroll early in the contest en route to a 3-1 victory at Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals, running their win streak to seven matches, improves to 11-1-1 on the season and stays perfect in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at 4-0. John Carroll, now 7-4-2 overall, absorbs its first conference loss of the year and now sits 3-1 within the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Otterbein wasted little time taking control, as Annie Mosca tallied her first goal of the season in the ninth minute off a nice pass from fellow midfielder Sydney Young toward the middle of the box.

  • Priscilla Severance doubled up that lead at the 17:18 mark after a Cardinal free quick. Haley Hott put the ball down and sent a quick pass up the right sideline to Bella Shivley, who rocketed a perfect cross right to the head of Severance near the goal.

  • Shivley capped the scoring flurry in the 24th minute, lofting a shot from 20 yards out over the head of JCU keeper Danielle DelDiudice and into the far corner of the net.
  • The Blue Streaks pushed forward in the second half, cracking through with a score of their own in the 61st minute when Jaclyn Audino found Brittany Dufalla with a through pass on the right side.

  • Otterbein steadied possession the remainder of the way and glided to another multi-score victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Shivley's first-half goal was her 17th of the year, officially passing her previous single-season record of 16 last fall. She remains top-five nationally at the moment.

  • Hott and Delaney Earl earned toughness points from the press box crew as the only Cardinals in the starting lineup with no long sleeves under their jerseys. Shivley went no sleeves but did rock gloves, an approach she may rethink moving forward after absorbing some nice scratches on her arms as the center of attention for opposing defenses.

  • Otterbein held a 25-2 advantage in shots and 14-1 edge in corner kicks. The Cards entered the week ranked sixth in the country for scoring offense.

  • The Cards are now 9-2 against John Carroll this decade, winning the last three matchups by a combined score of 11-3. JCU's pair of victories were 1-0 decisions in 2015 and 2016.

  • Emily Ganz, Otterbein's third-leading scorer, made a return to the lineup after missing the opening three OAC matches to regroup from an injury. She subbed in the 22nd minute and played the rest of the way.
WHAT THEY SAID:

"Nothing else matters except focusing on the first goal. Then you work toward the second goal and so on. The OAC is a different environment of play, and teams are going to keep pushing. Understanding that aspect is important so we always need to continue working offensively." - Priscilla Severance
