Cards Relinquish Lead, Drop 3-2 Heartbreaker at ONU

ADA, Ohio- Men's soccer fell at Ohio Northern 3-2 on a fog covered pitch Wednesday night. The Cardinals (11-6, 5-3) led the host Polar Bears 2-0 at halftime, but ONU (13-4-2, 5-2-1) found its offense late in the match scoring three unanswered goals.

The Cardinals struck first in the rain when Paul Hensley found Pau Piang for the goal at 5:57, the quickest Otterbein has scored in a match this season. The offense didn't let up with Hensley earning his second assist of the match on a Kennedy Mensah strike at 17:21. The Cardinals carried the 2-0 lead into the break while trailing in shots 9-8.

The eve of Halloween would be a tale of two halves though, as the fog rolled into Ada so did the Polar Bear offense. ONU was finally able to answer the Cards at 62:48 on a double assisted goal from Luke Fickenworth and Jimmy Walkinshaw finding Beelal Hasan for his first score of the night.

Senior Kennedy Mensah was handed a straight red card at 77:21 after slipping into a collision, causing him to miss the remainder of the contest and the Cardinals to play a man down. The Polar Bears took advantage of the short handed Cards and scored the equalizer just two minutes later with Hasan earning his second goal of the match.

ONU found the game winner at 82:27 with Walkinshaw assisting Fickenworth. The Cardinals nearly tied the match with just 52 seconds remaining, Liam Heard put a shot on net that was saved by ONU goalie John Lombardo, his fifth and most important save of the match.

Collin Hoffmann played the full 90 minutes in net for the Cardinals, making four saves. Ohio Northern finished the match with a 22-14 shot advantage, as well as a 7-2 corner kick margin.

Otterbein controls its own destiny for OAC Tournament seeding while the Cards could finish anywhere from second to fifth place after the outcome of this weekend's match.

The regular season finale takes place Saturday inside Memorial Stadium at 2 p.m. for senior day against Capital.
