MARIETTA, Ohio – The No. 21-ranked Otterbein women's soccer team grabbed another Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victory on the road Wednesday night, blowing past host Marietta College by a lopsided score of 5-0.
The Cardinals, advancing to 9-1-1 overall and a quick 2-0 in OAC play, took a 3-0 lead into halftime following goals from
Regina Severance (16:25),
Delaney Earl (31:55) and
Katie Exline (44:28) less than a minute before the break.
The fun was just getting started, however, as All-American midfielder
Bella Shivley took center stage once again in the second half to move atop the Otterbein record books. Only a junior, Shivley entered the night with 95 career points and three shy of reaching former standout Karen Beers (2003-06) on the program's all-time scoring list.
"Without the support of my teammates, coaches, family and friends, I wouldn't be able to play the game I love most," said Shivley, reigning OAC Midfielder of the Year and third team All-American. " I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing and historical program."
Shivley assisted Severance's first goal of the match, and then found the back of the net twice after intermission to make another piece of school history. She converted a penalty kick at the 61:49 mark to tie Beers at 98 points and then, in typical Shivley fashion, roped a shot from 20 yards out into the far upper 90 for her record-breaking moment.
Shivley, who entered the week ranked top-five nationally in scoring, now sits at exactly 100 career points (39 goals and 22 assists) in just 44 collegiate matches.
"I could have never imagined this, but the feeling is both indescribable and surreal," added Shivley. "I am blessed to do what I love most, in an Otterbein jersey, and surrounded by the people I love most."
Making matters more impressive, Shivley accomplishes the feat despite missing seven games as a freshman when she suffered a season-ending knee injury. In addition to becoming Otterbein's all-time leading scorer, Shivley now also equals her own single-season records of 16 goals and 40 points from last fall. She needs just three more goals to reach Beers' career mark of 42.
"As coaches, we always talk about moments we'd love for various people to experience," said head coach
Brandon Koons, now in his 21st season. "Karen Beers wanted nothing less than for our team to succeed. If someone was ever going to break her record, there isn't a better person than
Bella Shivley."
"The amount of time it took Bella to break this record is amazing, but it could have been sooner," Koons continued. "There are times she could have done it by herself, but instead created a chance for a teammate. That energy is common within this team and, I think, a big reason why we have been successful. Bella just leads the way."
Otterbein finished the night with a decisive advantages in shots (31-8) and corner kicks (9-3). Goalkeeper
Erin Gordon went the full distance in goal to earn another shutout, while
Regina Severance enjoyed a three-point night after assisting Earl's score midway through that opening half.
The Pioneers fall to 6-5-1 on the season, and now 0-2 against the league.
The Cards will return home and conclude the week inside Memorial Stadium, playing host to Baldwin Wallace come Saturday at 2 p.m.
