WESTERVIILE, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team dropped two one-run games against Mount St. Joseph, as the Lions hit three home runs over the course of two games.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: MOUNT ST. JOSEPH – 3, OTTERBEIN – 2
- Gabby Johnson stepped into the circle in game one and retired the first three batters, before allowing a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning.
- Maria Herron tied the game at 1-1 with a towering solo shot to right center, which was the first of her career.Â
- Brandy Bunch of Mount St. Joseph hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Lions a 3-1 edge. Herron hit her second homer of the contest in the bottom half of the frame cutting the deficit to a single run.
- The Cardinals went three up, three down in the seventh with a few pop outs that were tricky to handle for the Lions.
GAME TWO: MOUNT ST. JOSEPH – 2, OTTERBEIN – 1
- Anna Edwards started off strong by throwing five shutouts innings with six strikeouts before allowing her first run in the sixth.Â
- The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first in the fourth inning off a Courtney Hackney sacrifice which scored pinch runner Erin Vonderwell on a close play at the plate.
- In the sixth inning, Savannah Sturgill of the Lions knotted the score up at 1-1 with a solo home run to left field.
- Mount St. Joseph had runners on first and second base, as Sarah Miller attempted a sacrifice bunt and appeared to make contact for a foul ball. However there was no call and resulted in a passed ball, as the runner on second advanced to third while the runner on first stayed. During the same at-bat, Miller recorded the go-ahead run on a sac fly.
- In the seventh inning, Savannah McCoppin made solid contact in the bottom of the seventh but the hit went right to the right fielder. Herron ended the game with an awkward pop up to shallow left field as the shortstop made the play.
