Softball Splits With JCU, Earns Spot in OAC Tournament


UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Otterbein softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader with John Carroll Wednesday, as the Cardinals clinched a spot in the OAC Tournament next weekend. The Cardinals hold a 20-14 overall record and an 11-5 conference mark, while JCU falls to 13-23 on the year and 3-13 in the league. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
GAME ONE: JOHN CARROLL - 13, OTTERBEIN - 4 (5 INNINGS)
  • The Cardinals scored two runs in the first frame, as Katrina Wierzbicki and Kayla Queer each drove a run in. John Carroll responded in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three runs. 
  • Alyson McAdams singled to center field to score Anna Edwards to tie the game at 3-3. Savannah McCoppin singled on the next at bat to give Otterbein a 4-3 edge. 
  • The Blue Streaks put together an unbelievable fifth inning by scoring 10 runs, the most they have had in one inning this season. The 13 runs by JCU was the most this season.
GAME TWO: OTTERBEIN - 9, JOHN CARROLL - 1 (5 INNINGS)
  • The Cardinals were ready to go in the second game, as Otterbein scored three runs in the first inning. Courtney Hackney drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to score Maria Herron. Edwards doubled down the right field line to score two more runs and give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. 
  • Edwards once again doubled, this time to center field, and tallied her third and fourth RBIs of the afternoon. 
  • In the circle, Edwards dominated by recording five strikeouts in five innings of action.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Alyson Shaw needs five hits to become the Otterbein all-time hits leader, to pass former teammate Bailey McElwain
  • The Cardinals are 3-0 in game two of doubleheaders following a loss in game one, with two of the results ending in five innings.
  • Otterbein, Baldwin Wallace, Muskingum and Ohio Northern have all clinched a spot into the OAC Tournament, with the seeding still undecided as the Cardinals will face BW and Muskingum battled with ONU. 
  • Edwards earns her seventh win of the year and now has a 3.69 ERA.

The Cardinals will honor their seniors Alyson Shaw, Anna Edwards and Gabby Johnson Saturday at 1 p.m. against Baldwin Wallace.
