Cardinals Tie Thomas More and Win at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team traveled north and south for different non-conference outings to continue a week full of action, heading down to Thomas More University in Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon before traveling up to Oberlin College come Thursday.

The Cardinals, now 19-16-1 on the season, will have Friday off and then are scheduled to play weekend doubleheaders against Marietta and Franklin.

Wednesday at Thomas More: (Tie 6-6, 10 innings)

The Cardinals fell behind early, as the Saints launched a two-run homer in the opening frame and then scored four runs with two outs in the second inning.

Otterbein's pitching staff held TMC scoreless from that point as the offense began to slowly chip away, plating exactly one run in each of the next five innings. Matthew Gibson began the scoring with a fielder's-choice RBI in the third, followed by a solo home run from Ben Beachy down the left-field line in the fourth.

Gibson rocketed an RBI-double in the fifth, Sam Edgell ripped an RBI-single up the middle in the sixth, and Tim Snyder scored on a passed ball with bases loaded in the seventh. The Cards trailed 7-6 entering their final at-bat in the ninth, but a pinch-hit single with one out by Chase Collins brought home Snyder to tie the game.

Otterbein had the go-ahead run in scoring position with one out, but a hard-hit ball from Adam Stotler was caught in center field and another shot from Beachy was also snagged near the same spot.

Thomas More hit into a double play to end the ninth, a hard liner off Snyder's bat in the tenth was grabbed by the third baseman, and the game was ultimately called with one out in the bottom half due to lightning. It marks the first tie for Otterbein in over two decades.

Beachy and Edgell both had three hits in the game, including a double by Beachy in the sixth that made him Otterbein's new all-time leader in the category. He now has 53 for his career, passing former All-American and fellow OAC Player of the Year Wes Meadows (2010-13).

Cody Goletz, Jaryd Murphy and Nick Meyer combined to throw over seven scoreless inning of relief en route to nine strikeouts. Meyers, who is also the backup catcher, recently started contributing on the pitching side as well.

Thursday at Oberlin: (Win 13-8)

The Cardinals wasted no time jumping ahead for good against the Yeomen, getting two runners on to begin the first inning before RBI groundouts from Edgell and Connor Brett.

Otterbein's big frame came in the third, scoring six times during a sequence that began with a two-run blast by Beachy and then RBI hits from Brett, Chase Collins and Will Johnson. The Cards played without starters Tyler Thompson and Luke Barber (rest).

Adam Stotler continued the scoring with his first-career home run in the fourth, launching a towering moonshot over the left-field fence. Otterbein added to its lead and found itself leading 13-1 by the seventh-inning stretch.

Oberlin (14-20) never quit playing and mounted a late comeback, scoring seven runs across its next two at-bats to keep things interesting late. Tall lefty-hander Blake Baldridge helped shut the door to finish the day, scattering four hits but not surrendering a run after entering with one out in the eighth.

Sophomore Ethan Doty was credited with a victory on the mound as the starter, allowing just one early run over three innings before the Cards employed a whole-staff approach. Stotler hit a perfect 4 for 4 offensively, Brett had three RBI and the victory brings decorated head coach George Powell to 499 for his career.

Beachy, who also recently became the program's record holder in career at-bats, currently sits near the top of multiple offense categories and has a chance to become Otterbein's all-time hits leader down the stretch. He has 206 at the moment, just six shy of Meadows and his record 212.

Otterbein is scheduled to play a conference doubleheader at Marietta on Saturday but, in the case of inclement weather, that twinbill will be moved to Monday as a result of graduation on Marietta's campus. Senior Day for the Cardinals is set for Sunday against Franklin, with games at 1 and 4 p.m. followed by a recognition ceremony on the field.
