Cards Knock Off Polar Bears in Final Seconds

ADA, Ohio- Otterbein earned its second Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victory of the season Wednesday night, on the road at Ohio Northern. The Cardinals trailed 79-78 with 22 seconds left before Justin Carter was able to spin his way through the lane, draw a foul and convert the three-point play to help the Cards emerge victorious, 81-79. The big bucket for Carter comes in his first game back from an injury suffered on December 29 against Albion, result in missing five-straight games.

Otterbein improves its record to 5-11 overall and 2-7 within league action while the loss for Ohio Northern drops the Polar Bears to 6-10 overall and 2-7 in OAC play. Otterbein has now earned both of its OAC victories on the road, and will return home Saturday for double-header action against Heidelberg, men will tip-off at 3 p.m. with women's action to follow.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Otterbein trailed the Polar Bears by as many as six in the first half, with ONU holding a 25-19 advantage at the 9:03 mark.
     
  • The Cards were jump-started by a Kobe Long-Weber made three pointer plus a foul, went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes, taking a 29-25 lead before an ONU timeout.
     
  • Otterbein never lost the lead down the stretch of the first half, and pulled out ahead of the hosts by nine before ONU was able to chip the lead down to five at the break, 42-37. Mo Beavers led all scorers at the break with 15, while both teams shot an impressive 53 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of action.
     
  • The Cards led nearly the entire second half, by as many as nine during stretches, until ONU was finally able to tie things up at 73 with just 2:26 left. The lead changed hands twice over the final 2:26, with ONU going in front 79-78 following two made free throws by Caleb Bryan.
     
  • Carter drove the lane following a timeout, spinning through two Polar Bear defenders and muscling up a shot through contact. After converting the and-one free throw with 12 seconds left, ONU failed to get a clean shot up and Otterbein escaped.
     
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Carter, Otterbein's second-leading scorer, came off the bench to score 16 points.
     
  • Four Cardinals delivered a double-digit scoring effort, with Mo Beavers scoring a game-high 23, while Dallas Patrick scored 17 and Kobe Long-Weber added 10.
     
  • The Cards were red hot from the free throw line, sinking 19 of 20 attempts and going a perfect 12 of 12 in the second half. ONU was just as impressive at the stripe with a 21 of 24 output.
     
  • Otterbein finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field and went 10 of 21 from behind the three-point arch.
