UNIVERISTY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Multiple pieces of history were secured Wednesday night for the No. 22-ranked Otterbein volleyball program, which emerged at host John Carroll by final scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.
As a result, the Cardinals have now won a staggering 45 sets in a row… believed to be an Ohio Athletic conference record. They also stand alone with the longest winning streak in school history at 16 matches, as the 2011 group had previously won 15 in a row as well.
Furthermore, head coach
Monica Wright reaches another milestone by notching win No. 300 of her decorated career. She currently holds an overall record of 300-158 since taking over the program back in 2007.
"These milestones aren't just about me," Wright said. "They represent every player (and assistant coach) that started buying in when I first took the job. Each person has done their part in becoming invested, and then helping pass it along to the next class. There will always be ups and downs, wins and losses. But we continue building this together along the way."
It has been quite the week-long stretch for Wright, who was recently inducted into the Wittenberg Athletics 'Hall of Honor' for her stellar playing career from 2001-04. She was a 2x All-American outside hitter for the powerhouse Tigers.
Fast forward to present day, and her Otterbein program is as hot as ever in the win-loss column. The Cardinals are now 17-2 this season, and have not dropped a set since back on September 7 at Denison.
Otterbein settled into an early lead after a convincing first set, but had to work a bit harder in the following two. The Cards led just 13-12 before rattling off four-straight points, finding enough breathing room to keep the Blue Streaks at arm's length down the stretch.
John Carroll threw its best punch in a third frame that saw ties at 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 before Otterbein won some key points in crunch time. Two kills from reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week
Amber Greeley, along with a service ace from
Morgan Hartman, helped the Cardinals escape.
Otterbein has now won the past nine meetings against John Carroll. Hartman (13) and
Madison McCoy combined for 24 kills while
Emma Linehan (9-2-16) and
Julia Vermilion both had nine. Vermilion just missed a double-double with her 11 digs.
Carlie Craycraft, right there with the national leaders in assists per set, had another 48 as the offense hit .325 collectively. She also just missed a double-double with nine digs.
Bridget Oder came up with a match-high 21 digs in the back row and freshman
Amanda Troyer had 11 herself. JCU's Cassi Calamunci led all players with 15 kills.
The Cardinals will be back home to finish out the week, hosting a tri-match with Heidelberg and Mount St. Joseph throughout Saturday afternoon in the Rike Center.
