WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 20-ranked Otterbein volleyball team provided a bit of symmetry in securing its 20th win of the season Wednesday night, extending the program's longest winning streak in the process.
The host Cardinals flew past Wilmington College in straight sets, remaining undefeated (6-0) in OAC play following scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-16. As a result, the group has now won 19 matches in a row and sits alone atop the league standings, by virtue of Heidelberg upsetting nationally-ranked Ohio Northern in five sets.
Otterbein (20-2 overall) will now turn its attention to a pair of challenging road tests that will certainly impact its regular-season finish in the conference. The stretch begins this Saturday afternoon when the team travels to Muskingum for a rematch of last year's OAC Tournament Championship, when the Cards emerged in a five-set thriller.
Wilmington, looking to improve behind first-year head coach Sophie Windover, remained close early thanks to five service errors from the Cardinals in the first set. Otterbein eventually settled in, using a 9-3 run to comfortably take the opener.
Carlie Craycraft had 16 assists in the first set while
Madison McCoy went a clean 5-0-5 in the middle.
Otterbein began the second set on an 8-1 spurt before the Quakers fought back to get within 13-11. That cushion would be extended back as the Cards flew out on a 6-0 run, ultimately taking the frame.
Various lineups continued rotating in for Otterbein as the third set commenced, with
Kailey Mishler taking over the setting duties and her group never trailing. Sophomore
Geneva Moreno came off the bench to help ignite a rally behind her serve, charting two aces in a stretch where the Cards won six points in a row.
Otterbein eventually led the final set 18-6 and never looked back. The Cardinals hit .393 for the night, getting a 10-1-17 effort from
Julia Vermilion and a line of 8-2-14 via
Morgan Hartman. Sophomore
Anna Cecil chipped in seven kills on the outside.
Craycraft and Mishler combined for 40 assists as the Otterbein offense hit over .300 for the eighth time this fall. Wilmington received six kills from both Sydney Geibel and Victoria Long.
First serve this weekend in New Concord is scheduled for 1 p.m. Otterbein will then travel to ONU come middle of next week.
