BEXLEY, Ohio- "We're excited to win... staying undefeated is just the icing" – Steve Nash, 2006 NBA MVP.
Â
It's been a long and unusual road, but the Otterbein men's soccer program did it. The group has completed the first undefeated regular season in program history.
The Cardinals culminate their 2021 fall with a current record of 13-0-4 and 7-0-2 within Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play after taking down cross-town rival and the newly renamed Capital Comets, 2-1.
 Â
As a result, Otterbein and John Carroll will share a piece of the league's regular-season crown. But, working through tiebreaker scenarios, the Blue Streaks will receive the top seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament as a result of its victory over Ohio Northern down in fourth place. The Cards managed to just tie the Polar Bears earlier this week.
Â
This is the second time the Cardinals have won the regular-season title under head coach
Jason Griffiths, now in his fifth season.
Â
Gabe Sharrock provided both scores for the Cardinals, tallying his first in the 30th minute off a nice end-line pass from
Carter Ely. He was there far post to quickly head a bouncer into the net. Sharrock then converted the eventual game-winner later in the 78th minute during a corner-kick scrum, showing nice poise in corralling a loose ball in traffic before finishing strong.
Â
Otterbein finished with a marginal 10-5 shot advantage throughout a game that was played fairly tight, with few chances between on the attacking ends.
Â
The Cardinals will host a semifinal match on Thursday evening, with first kick and the opponent still to be determined. Stay tuned to otterbeincardinals.com and all Otterbein social media accounts for more information on OAC Tournament action.
