Cards Win Physical Rematch with Trine in NCAA Opener

[HOTO GALLERY (coming soon)

WESTERVILLE, Ohio- The Cardinals opened up NCAA Tournament play with a rematch of an early-season non-conference match. Otterbein once again emerged victorious over Trine, 5-1.

The Cardinals and Thunder played a physical brand of soccer, resulting in 27 combined fouls and five yellow cards. Otterbein will have a quick turnaround now as they will meet up with No. 10-ranked Chicago tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Drew Holman got the day started with a goal early on in the 11th minute. He made a couple of nice moves to beat the defense before finally burying a shot into the lower left side of the goal. The Cardinals would take that 1-0 lead into the half, outshooting Trine 8-1.

In the second half, Carter Ely delivered what would eventually be enough to hold the Thunder off, giving the Cards a comfortable 2-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Liam Heard weaved his way through nearly the entire Thunder defense before giving the Cards a 3-0 advantage.

Later on, in the 64th minute, after a couple of aggressive plays drew yellow cards on both sides, Kyle Haberkorn earned a penalty kick for Otterbein after being shoved down in the box; Will Isaac scored the PK.

After the Cardinals cleared the bench to give some fresh legs NCAA Tournament experience, Trine finally found their way onto the scoreboard. The fifth and final score for Otterbein came from an excellent tick-tack-toe play that saw Luke Crockett feed a pass into Coby Stover, who then found Tord Heskestad open for his first collegiate score.

Otterbein and Chicago will kick off at 1 p.m. tomorrow in second-round action from Memorial Stadium.
