FINAL RESULTS
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Otterbein wrestling team got its 2021-22 season officially underway at the Lycoming Invitational throughout Sunday, competing against a handful of teams in a round-robin format.
The event was not scored from a traditional team or bracket standpoint, but instead guaranteed each wrestler three matches against opponents around their class level and ability. Multiple Cardinals launched their seasons nicely in the record column while others began getting experience at the college level.
Among the top highlights were
Nathan Leko,
Ryan Whitten,
Cale Callahan,
Austin Amens,
Joey Bradberry,
Sam Shalvey and
Levi Kibler all going 3-0 in their respective classes.
Leko (149) had two decisions and a fall at 1:44. Whitten, beginning the year ranked No. 4 nationally at 157 pounds, was dominant with a trio of bonus-point victories. He has a fall in 1:54, a 10-0 major decision and then a 15-0 technical fall.
Callahan, a promising freshman, delivered three workmanlike victories at 165 pounds to get his career rolling. He emerged by scores of 9-2, 6-2 and 5-3.
Amens (174) tallied a pair of technical falls by counts of 18-1 and 16-0, along with a pin in just 67 seconds. Bradberry made quick work of his opponents at 184, pinning all three in 1:43 of mat time or less.
Kibler (174) and Shalvey (184) also had nice days in their other brackets. Kibler worked for a pair of falls in the second period while Shalvey had a bit of everything in the form of a major decision, fall and medical forfeit.
Kyle De Moss,
Joey Buckland,
Jojo Simcoe,
Jarrod Setliff,
Abel Garantche,
Brandon Thomas and Billy-Reed Bodey all picked up two victories, many of them securing multiple falls in the process as well. Setliff's only loss was to Lycoming's Gable Crebs, a regional placer back in 2019.
Otterbein will look to continue working out the kinks and finding their form here throughout November, returning to action next weekend at the Adrian Duals in Michigan.
